Finally, it was ‘the mission accomplished’. The National Conference on ‘Media and Human Rights: The Global Scenario’ was a grand success. And the phrase ‘grand success’ is nothing but the ‘grand total’ of the feedback received from the delegates of the conference. Needless to say, they were the proud moments for the Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) and the Center for Communication Programmes (CCP), Tumkur University – the organizers of the day-long event.
Inauguration : Minister for Higher Education Dr. V. S. Acharya, who inaugurated the conference and released the proceedings, emphasized on reframing the education system to create awareness of human rights among students in schools and colleges.  He welcomed the move to include human rights in the curriculum of media education.
“Media, both print and electronic, have emerged so powerful in the recent decades that individual and social life has become almost unimaginable without their presence. Meanwhile, human rights too have emerged the indispensable issues of the coeval social discourse, thanks to the increased awareness and self-esteem among the members of civil society” he said.
Media industry has been witnessing a lot of changes and fluctuations in the recent times. The impact of globalization has not left even the media. In the race for survival, majority of the media industry have embraced commercialization, which has raised various questions and concerns among the conscious citizens, he added.
Dr. Acharya said the competition among the channels perhaps to maintain or increase the TRP ratings has led to the criticism that media are trivializing news. The situation resulted out of ‘survival of the fittest’ scene, has raised concerns among the conscious public that how far the media industry can give justice to human rights during their routine coverage, he observed.
Prof. J. V. Vilanilam, the former Vice Chancellor of University of Kerala, Smt. Latha Krishna Rao, Principal Secretary, Higher Education Department, Vice Chairman of KSHEC and the Vice Chancellor of Tumkur University Dr. S. C. Sharma and Prof. K. M. Kaveriappa, the Executive Director of the KSHEC were present at the inaugural.
Keynote address
Prof. J. V. Vilanilam, the former Vice Chancellor of University of Kerala, delivered an impressive and thought provoking keynote address, following the inaugural. Some of the recommendations made in his address were worth noting:
o   The media should be free from governmental and private proprietorial control that will limit individual rights to express even dissenting views.

o   Media’s independence from governments and vested interests is highly essential if they have to provide high quality information with fairness, objectivity and social relevance, especially while reporting events connected with disarmament, nuclear safey, human rights, ecological threats, sustainable development and environmental protection.

o   Media should not be concentrated in the hands of a few but really autonomous and if necessary small and diachronic instead of monopolizing news gathering and dissemination.

o   The rights of men and women deprived of freedom for so long in the history of the world have to be specially protected.

o   The media of communication should never promote polarization in society; instead they should strive to remove the causes of divisions and promote harmony, in a rational, logical, reasonable and scientific manner.

o   Media should strive for conscientizing citizens and governments to remove the socioeconomic, political and cultural causes of human rights violations.

Media told to make best use of RTI

Veteran journalist Sri. M. N. Kote Nagabhushan
distributing books on RTI Act to the students of Journalism.

Tumkur-based veteran journalist and social activist Sri. M. N. Kote Nagabhushan delivered a special lecture on ‘Right to Information (RTI) Act and Media’ for the students of Journalism at University College of Arts recently. Following are the highlights of his talk:
·        Media should make the best use of RTI and take its fruits to the common men.
·        RTI Act is a strong weapon for journalists. They should contribute their best towards building a transparent society by making use of all the possibilities of the legislation.
·        I don’t believe in the notion that a journalist should not be an activist. There is no point in criticizing the functioning of the government standing on an unknown corner. We should fight directly as much as possible.
·        In length and size, the RTI Act may be smaller compared to many other legislations of this country. But it is stronger than any other law. In a way, India got its independence on the very day the RTI Act was enforced.

·        In spite of its advantages, RTI Act still has its own lacuna. The government should try to make it more people-friendly by solving certain complexities. The legislation has not reached the common men as expected earlier. Our media has a greater role to play here.

Sri. T. N. Hariprasad, Principal,
addressing students.
Sri. T. N. Hariprasad, the Principal, University College of Arts, who presided over the programme, observed that people have not yet lost their faith in Democracy just because of the existence of legislations like that of Right to Information Act. Sri. Padmanabha K. V., Assistant Professor in Journalism, was present.

Workshop to formulate interdisciplinary project proposals held at Tumkur University

Dr. S. C. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, Tumkur University,
addressing the faculty members at the workshop.

It was indeed a memorable day for the faculty members of Tumkur University. In a first-of-its-kind program that went on and on from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm on June 9, faculty members from various disciplines – Science and Technology, Commerce and Management, and Humanities – sat together, pooled their ideas, discussed and chalked out a number of possible interdisciplinary research projects they can take up as a team.
The event took off with the introductory words of Dr. S. C. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, Tumkur University, which continued with brief presentations by various faculty members representing different disciplines. He was in fact the encouraging and guiding force behind this innovative idea. Dr. Sharathchandra R. G., Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Dr. Shripad Bhat, Assistant Professor, Dr. DVG Kannada Adhyayana Kendra, Dr Suresh D, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Mr. Rupesh Kumar A, Assistant Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, Dr. Ashok Antony D’Souza, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Works and others made their presentations introducing various subjects having interdisciplinary significance.
Based on the presentations, a list of various research areas was prepared, and the faculty members were grouped into various teams as per the interest expressed by them.  In fact, there were more than 20 such groups altogether. They gathered separately and explored possibilities of carrying out interdisciplinary projects. Almost each group consisted members from diverse disciplines including science, arts and commerce. A group that took up the issue of climate change and food security, for instance, included members from the faculty of Physics, Economics, Mass Communication, Political Science, Social Works and so on.
After taking part in brainstorming sessions, the groups, by evening came out with various project proposals having interdisciplinary importance. They shared their ideas with other groups, and explained how they were going about towards realizing their innovative initiatives. They also tried to chalk out the required funding to carry out the projects and traced the possible agencies which might provide them financial assistance.

“Yya! It was really a useful and meaningful day…!” That was the satisfaction all the participants had in their mind when they came out of the conference hall in the evening. And by that time, there was a cool breeze and a light drizzle outside…

Don’t spark fire of caste, light lamp of education: K E Radhakrishna

Prof. K. E. Radhakrishna addressing students.

“Don’t spark the fire of caste, but light the lamp of education” Those were the words of well-known academician and litterateur Prof. K. E. Radhakrishna. And over a thousand youngsters listening to these words were, undoubtedly, thrilled, excited and electrified. Their loud applause and cheers themselves proved this.
“Casteism has enveloped all fields. It has not left even the Judiciary. People should understand that they can only instigate disharmony among their fellow beings in the name of caste,” Prof. Radhakrishna said. “It is only education that can light lamps in their lives,” he added.
That was the occasion of the annual day celebrations of University College of Arts, a constituent college of Tumkur University. It was also the occasion of the concluding ceremony of all cultural, sports, NSS and NCC activities of the college. And obviously it was altogether a different day for the enthusiastic students. The day was a mix of fun, entertainment, thrill and also education.
“Leadership is declining in almost all the fields including political and economic sectors. It is the responsibility of the new generation to fill this vacuum,” Prof Radhakrishna, the chief guest suggested.
He also advised the students to attain a good command over English language even as they acquire expertise in Kannada, their mother tongue. “Having a hold over Kannada is certainly appreciable and necessary, but a command over English too has become inevitable in the present competitive world,” he stressed.
Prof. N. Lakshmikanth, Registrar (Evaluation), Tumkur University, inaugurating the annual day celebrations of University College of Arts, Tumkur.

Prof. N. Lakshmikanth, Registrar (Evaluation), Tumkur University, who earlier inaugurated the ceremony, urged the students to inculcate discipline, values and knowledge in their life. “Competition is increasing in the world every other day. Only those who can attain a respectable personality by continuous study and immense knowledge may survive,” he observed.
“A teacher who does not correct a student when he commits a mistake, is himself the greatest enemy of that student,” Prof. Lakshmikanth said.
Sri T. N. Hariprasad, Principal, University College of Arts, presided. Deputy Registrar (Aca) Dr. S. Srinivasa, Deputy Registrar (Eva) Sri N. Prasanna Kumar, Sri B. L. Mukundappa, Principal, University College of Science distributed prizes to the winners of various competitions.
Felicitation
Felicitation to Sri T. R. Anantharamu, Senior Scientist (retd.), Geological Survey of India, was a heart-touching moment in the day-long ceremony. The College that has maintained the tradition of honoring achievers from the district every year had decided to felicitate Sri Anantharamu on the college day.
Sri T. R. Anantharamu, Senior Scientist (retd), Geological Survey of India, and his wife Smt. A. R. Annapurna, being felicitated during the College Day ceremony.

Sri Anantharamu is basically from Talagunda of Sira taluk. Incidentally, he is an alumnus of the erstwhile Government Science College, the present University College of Science, where actually the felicitation took place. For Sri Anantharamu it was undoubtedly a great coincidence.
It was only Sri Anantharamu’s commitment and perseverance which made him a personality of repute, who is certainly a good model for the youngsters of nowadays, to follow and emulate. After completing his graduation from the Science College, he stepped into University of Mysore for an M Sc in Geology. He passed the post-graduation with a first class and took up teaching in Government Science College, Bangalore and the erstwhile KREC (presently NIT-K), Surathkal, Mangalore. Later he joined Geological Survey of India as a scientist.
Sri Anantharamu has dedicated his life to popularize Science through literature. He is one among the few science writers in Kannada. In fact, one can find hundreds of people writing science in English, but those who present it in simple Kannada are very rare.  Sri Anantharamu has got this unique talent of explaining science in simple and lucid language, which can be understood even by a common man.  He has published over 800 articles in various newspapers and periodicals in Kannada for the past four decades. More importantly, he has published around 55 books in Kannada on various topics in Science, and has been the editor of various reference works. He has been active in popularizing science through radio and television too all these years.
Sri T. R. Anantharamu addressing the students.
Sri Anantharamu’s ‘Himada Samrajyadalli’ (1985), ‘Kartaranigondu Kivimatu’ (2003) and ‘Pashchima Mukhi’ (2008) have won the Karnataka Sahitya Academy awards. His ‘Bhukampanagalu’ has been recognized by the Aryabhata award while ‘Kalagarbhakke Keelikai’ has won the Goruru Ramaswamy Iyengar award. Recently, he was recognized as the ‘Science Communicator’ by the Vision Group of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka.
It was certainly a proud moment to the University College to felicitate its own alumnus who made the district proud through his contributions to the society. Smt. A. R. Annapurna, wife of Sri Anantharamu, who had always been supportive to his activities, had accompanied him during the felicitation ceremony.

A day on Devarayanadurga!

Cool breeze amidst the hot sun... green patches surrounding the giant rocks... steep mountain... beautiful sholas... mango groves... old temple... tender cucumber... naughty monkeys... Yes, certainly that was a memorable day for the students of Journalism. They were on a trekking to Devarayanadurga, one of the ever attractive sites of the ‘Kalpataru Nadu’. The day was full of fun, thrill, enjoyment and learning. There would be no better way to explain the memories to you than showing a few snaps... And they are here for you...

Here is a response given by Ramya B T, one of our students of final year, to the debate started by Udayavani daily on the topic whether Indian agriculture requires foreign investment. The response was published on March 2, 2011. The original page can be viewed HERE.

Language should become main strength for journos: Niranjan Vanalli

Dr. Niranjan Vanalli addressing the students of Journalism.

Tumkur: Language has become a major problem for the new generation journalists. Those who enter the field without a command over language will themselves become a threat to the journalism industry, observed Dr. Niranjan Vanalli from Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, University of Mysore.
Addressing the students of Journalism of University College of Arts during his visit to Tumkur University, he said language should become the main strength for journalists.
It is a tragedy that a strange generation is getting formed in the recent times, who can neither handle Kannada nor English properly. The problems in learning the language should be addressed at the primary education level itself, he noted.
Reporting or news writing is a technique, which you can learn in a few months. But attaining command over a language is a long process. The young journalists should give more importance to this aspect, Dr. Vanalli suggested.
He said those who can use both English and Kannada effectively even as they are students, have a wonderful future. “Opportunities are numerous in the modern world, but one should prepare himself according to the requirements of the time,” he stressed.
You may accept journalism as a service or a profession, but you should succeed in your endeavors, he wished.
The students interacted with the eminent writer with a lot of questions and enthusiasm.
